Many breeds having Domestic Longhairs look more like Persian cats; identifying a purebred Persian cat is not easy, can be even more tricky as there are many variations available in this breed.

Identify the Persian cat with its Physical characteristics: 

FACE: 

  • The face of Persian cats is more round in shape with full and puffy cheeks. They have a peculiar snubbed nose, which is not much prominent.
  • Persian cats have large, expressive, and prominent eyes that may be colored amber, blue or a mix of both. They have small and round-tipped ears. 
  • But there are some varieties of Persian cats having flat faces. While others may have more round faces, often popular as doll-face cats.

  • Himalayan division Persian cats have cream or white bodies. They generally have blue colored eyes.

  • Persian cats under the silver and golden division have either shaded silver or golden coat or have a chinchilla coat. 
  • Shaded and smoke division category comprises the Persian cat having a shell and shaded cameo coats with a white undercoat and red, black, cream, or blue-cream tips. They appear more like Solid division cats, but on close examination, you will notice the undercoat. 
  • Parti-coloured division includes Persian cats having chocolate, blue-cream, tortoiseshell, and lilac-cream coats. Their coats may have a solid pattern or have red patches.  
  • Cats under tabby division have either mackerel, classic, or patched tabby patterns. Cats with classic tabbies have a bull eye pattern, while thin lines that appear drawn around the entire body pattern are seen in Mackerel tabbies. 
  • Calico and bicolored division Persian cats have dual colored coats. 

TAIL: 

  • The distinct tail in Persian cats plays a major role in identifying the purebred cat. They generally have short tails that are lofted upwards.
  • The tail usually has no curvature, and Persian cats tend to carry this tail at an angle below the back.

BODY SHAPE:

  • Persian cats are a short and stocky looking breed. Though they weigh slightly more than other breeds but have a compact body.
  • They have heavy bones in their legs portion that used to carry medium to the large-sized body. The shoulders in this breed are generally wide, and they have a thick and compact body.

  • They have distinct behavior patterns. Persian cats are known for their sweet, calm, and cuddly nature. They are playful and affectionate. 
  • This breed is known to play in its own way. They are a reserved breed yet can be considered as docile. Persians are less known for climbing and jumping behavior. They are more popular as a lap warmer breed that loves giving a cute pose on your sofa or adores you on your lap.

  • They are a quiet and calm type breed who often gets frightened by a loud noise. Persians are generally not welcoming but will greet people with their low-key, quiet meow. They have fewer tendencies to howl or meow unless they are frustrated.

Identifying a Persian kitten is way more challenging. Sometimes, all the characteristics mentioned above are not fully developed in kittens. In this case, the only option that remained is a DNA test. You can order a test kit from some reputable online site. Send the sample to the lab, and they will tell you the accurate result.
